Construction work is now being carried out on the US 183A Toll extension project in the US state of Texas. The work forms Phase III for the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority’s US 183A Toll extension project.
A further two tolled lanes will be built for a 10.56km section of US 183A between Leander and Liberty Hill, located to the north of the city of Austin. The project is expected to cost US$277 million. The US 183A route provides a bypass around Leander, decongesting the centre of the town, while the original US 183 road still carries local traffic.
The 183A Phase III Project is being implemented using the design-bid-build delivery method, with the construction work being handled by The Lane Construction Corporation. The 183A Phase III Project has been developed by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, in partnership with a number of government agencies in Central Texas including the Texas Department of Transportation(TxDOT), Capital Metro, and CAMPO.
Adding additional lanes along this section of US 183A is being carried out to cope with the population growth in Williamson Country, which is also expected to see a massive increase in traffic volumes of around 183% by 2042.
The US 183 highway provides an important route for the US, running from Refugio in Southern Texas all the way to Presho in South Dakota. Of note is that it was the last US Route to be paved along its length, with the last 32km stretch in Nebraska only being surfaced in 1967.
