A joint venture partnership is starting work on a major road contract worth $643 million in Tampa Bay Florida. The 50/50 partnership is being carried out by Lane Construction, the US subsidiary of the Webuild Group, and Superior Construction. The two firms are working together on the new Westshore Interchange for the client, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which awarded the contract. Superior Construction is acting as the managing (lead) member for the project.
The construction of the Westshore Interchange is the largest infrastructure project in the Tampa Bay area. The project will upgrade and boost safety and traffic capacity on I-275, SR 60 and Veterans Expressway. The work is needed as the area has high traffic volumes.
In 2023, the joint venture previously already signed a $10 million contract for design services, leading to these latest contracts. The phased development of the project involved collaboration with FDOT.
The work includes building new elevated ramps to improve access to Tampa International Airport, wider lanes on State Road 60, connection to express lanes, and improved infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. The work will also link northern and southern areas of the highway through new underpasses and bridges. An estimated 400,000 vehicles/day are expected to benefit from reduced travel times and safer infrastructure.
