Bridge replacement work is being planned for the busy SR 400 road link in the Atlanta area in the US state of Georgia. Three bridges are planned to be replaced with new structures along a 26km stretch of SR 400 and the work should be complete in 2025.
Building the new bridges will allow for the construction of two new toll lanes in either direction. These optional express lanes will be added between the interchange with I-285 and the McFarland Parkway.
The contract is worth over US$55 million and was awarded by the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT). CW Matthews Contracting Company/Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering will carry out the bridge works.
The bridges being replaced are at Pitts Road, Roberts Drive and Kimball Bridge Road. The Phase 1 Design-Build bridge work forms part of a phased delivery of the planned SR 400 Express Lanes project, using a $184 million INFRA grant Georgia DOT received to relieve congestion along this corridor.
The PPP project to widen SR 400 has met challenges but Georgia DOT is pushing ahead with preparatory works such as the bridge replacement. The widening work has an estimated pricetag of $3.9 billion. The work is needed as the route becomes heavily congested during peak periods. A bus rapid transit system will be included as part of the project.
