Federal funding worth $7.3 billion is being provided by the US Government to help pay for Atlanta’s SR400 extension project. The work is being carried out by Acciona, Sacyr and Meridiam in a consortium under a design, build, finance, operate and maintain package and involves adding express lanes to the SR400 route.
The project was awarded by the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) and will take around six years to complete. Valued at some $11 billion, the work will see 20km of express lanes added to SR400. This is the largest PPP project of any type in the US at present and the planning work has been managed by the Georgia DOT and the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA).
Once complete, the SR 400 Express Lanes will become part of the larger Georgia Express Lanes Network. The project is intended to help reduce Atlanta’s traffic congestion problems, which can be particularly acute at peak periods and cause length delays for drivers.
