Ammann’s steerable walk-behind rollers offers ease of use

Ammann’s steerable walk-behind rollers offers ease of use

Ammann is offering an innovation in the shape of its ARW 65-S walk-behind Roller, which features articulated steering. This make allows the user to guide the machine more accurately forward, backward, and laterally.

The new S version has a pivoting mechanism , unlike the prior version which only enables forward and reverse movements. With the S version, the machine can also be moved to the right and left using the control handle.

The lateral movement provides a key advantage. Body weight is not required to direct the machine, reducing operator fatigue, eliminating surface irregularities, and providing consistency throughout the shift.

“The lateral control makes operating the machine much easier – and much more precise,” said Ralf Brutschin, strategic commercial manager for Light Equipment at Ammann. “The steering results in increased productivity, efficiency and quality.”

A hydraulic drum swivel enables the movement when going forward or backward. The drum swivels 15º to the left and right. The operator controls the direction by pressing one of the two buttons on the steering unit.

The drawbar is shorter, which also makes the machine more compact, improving handling and making transport easier.

The ARW 65-S can be used for both soil and asphalt compaction and that is still the case with the new version. The 0.3mm amplitude setting suits the roller for compacting soil and substructures. The operator can switch to a lower amplitude of 0.15mm for compacting asphalt and bitumen. The machine has two scrapers on every drum and a 60litre water tank with sprinkler system, suiting it to use on asphalt surfaces.

It is available with engines from Hatz, Honda and Yanmar and an electric starter is standard for all three. The height-adjustable handle is designed to prevent unwanted vibration from reaching the operator. The roller offers clearance on both drum sides, allowing compaction work close to kerbs, retaining walls and road barriers.

The roller is built without mechanical fast-wearing parts such as V belts and a clutch, helping reduce maintenance needs. In addition, no special tools are required for daily maintenance work.  The ergonomic guide handle includes a feature that puts the machine in the neutral position if the operator releases grip. In reverse mode, the speed limit is set to 2.5km/h for safety.

The hydraulic drive ensures variable speed adjustment and smooth starting/braking action. The drive system has individual drive motors in each drum for high traction and gradeability. The sprinkling system prevents asphalt from caking on the drums and is integrated into the machine for convenience and to protect the system. The high-capacity cooling system utilises cooling fins on the hydraulic tank, helping the machine perform in hot conditions.

The machine can utilise ServiceLink, Ammann’s digital data management tool that provides customers with the information such as machine location, battery status and hours. Data transfer is automatic.
