A loan facility is expected to help pay for the construction of three new bridges in Metro Manila in the Philippines. Spanning the Marikina River, the three bridges are expected to cost US$211.4 million to build, with the necessary funding being sourced through the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Construction work is expected to start in 2023 and should take until 2026. The three bridges will measure a total of 3km in length, while their construction forms part of the Metro Manila Bridges Project for a total of 12 new structures. An agreement for the project has been reached between the ADB and the Philippines Government.

The project is being handled by the Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Detailed engineering and design work has already been completed for the three bridges.

In addition to improving transport by providing new links across the Marikina River, the bridges are also expected to reduce the risk of flooding in the area by making the riverbanks more resilient. Due to the risk of earthquakes in the region, the bridges will have to be designed and constructed to cope with large shocks however.
