Construction work is starting for Gronda highway in Genoa,Italy. The project is for a 65km stretch of highway and will cost €4.95 billion.
The work is made more complex by the topography along the alignment. This has resulted in the need for the construction of 25 tunnel sections with a total length of 55km, as well as 23 viaducts.
The project is being managed by the Italian road firm, Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI). Building the link will take 10 years to complete, due largely to the engineering challenge of driving the 25 tunnel stretches. The work was first planned in 2002 and will make a major improvement to transport in Italy’s Liguria Region.
