A road safety boost will be the result of new lighting systems being installed in Italian road tunnels. The Italian road firm Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI) has committed to spending €8 million on new lighting in 450 road tunnels as well as at highway junctions.

The latest LED lighting technology will be installed, replacing older generation sodium lights. Around 13,500 of the older type sodium lights will be removed.

The new LED lights have a considerably longer lifespan and require significantly less maintenance. LED lights also use less power and the replacement of the old sodium lights will cut usage by an estimated 10GWh/year.

The new lighting installation forms part of Italy’s Mercury Programme, which is intended to boost the sustainability of existing infrastructure.
