The project includes two linked schemes. One is for the 11km motorway from the N40 Bloomfield Interchange to Barnahely, which is being delivered by BAM. The other is for the 1.5km Ringaskiddy Relief Road being delivered by Sorensen.
BAM’s €206 million construction contract was awarded by Cork County Council. AtkinsRéalis was appointed by BAM to deliver comprehensive design services for the project. AtkinsRéalis is also providing low carbon design and construction technologies for the scheme, one of the first major infrastructure projects in Ireland to require a construction stage Climate Change Plan. The project is utilising extensive digital information management requirements for both design and construction phases.
Construction of this new link will support the Port of Cork’s relocation to Ringaskiddy. The project is being funded by Ireland’s Department of Transport through Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Once complete, the work will reduce congestion, boost safety and cut journey times for drivers, as well as strengthening Cork’s role in European trade and logistics.
Meanwhile, the Irish Government is set a budget of over €60 million for road projects and funding across Galway city and county in 2026. The New Roads Programme is providing €4.5 million for the Galway City Bypass. Other works include a safety scheme on the R332 in Kilbannon and for the final sections of the Athenry relief road.
