Funding packages worth a total of $80 million has been agreed to help deliver road improvement work for the Republic of Djibouti. The package follows discussions between the Djibouti Government and the African Development Bank Group (AfDB).
Road maintenance and upgrade work will be carried out to 7km of roads in Djibouti City. This will be paid for through a $22 million package provided by the African Development Fund (ADF). A further $30 million package from the ADF will help pay for improvement work to the road connecting Djibouti with Ethiopia and South Sudan.
The tiny nation relies heavily on transport, with its active port and roads crucial to its economy. Djibouti’s main port is key to the economies of landlocked Ethiopia and South Sudan and improving the road connections is of major importance for the region. The improved transport corridor linking the nations will deliver a huge economic boost once complete.
