Construction work is underway in Northern Morocco for the first section of the road upgrade project for the RN15 route, connecting the Nador with Guercif. This first stage is for a 37km dual carriageway costing $234.5 million, which will connect to the Fès-Oujda highway. The work includes building a new interchange as well as six viaducts. Funding for this stage of the project is being supplied by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and it is due for completion in early 2028.
Work is being carried out for the second section of the RN15 upgrade, which measures 40.5km in length. The third section links the port of Nador with Driouch and is approaching completion. The improved RN15 route will provide more capacity to and from the planned Nador West Med port complex.
Meanwhile, construction work is still underway in the south of the country to complete the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway, with the project being carried out in two sections. One of these sections is a new expressway connecting Tiznit and Laâyoune. The other section involved upgrading the stretch of RN1 connecting Laâyoune and Dakhla, which is largely complete.
Included in the project is the viaduct spanning Oued Sakia El Hamra, which is due for completion in mid-2027. The viaduct is costing $152 million to build and forms part of the RN1 expressway linking Tiznit with Dakhla. The viaduct project started in 2024 and it will measure 1.65km in length and 21m wide when complete. The structure features 15 spans that sit on bored piles and it is designed to carry two lanes of traffic in either direction, as well as featuring facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The 1,055km Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway project is costing the country a total $988 million and the project is intended to improve transport for South Morocco and Western Sahara. The work is being managed by Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment and Water.
