The California Transportation Commission is setting a $1.7 billion budget for highway upgrades. The programme of work will be managed by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

The project will focus on improving mobility and safety as well as boosting climate resilience. The SR70 route will be one of several being upgraded, with the work focussing on preventing damage from rockslides. General safety improvements being carried out across California will include installing new guardrail, replacing traffic signs, removing trees considered potentially hazardous and improving culverts.

Maintenance work will be carried out on key routes. Traffic control systems such as cameras, emergency warning message systems and emergency radio systems will also be upgraded.
