Construction is commencing for two major expressway projects in Vietnam, worth a combined US$1.4 billion. A 121km expressway will link Cao Bang Province with Lang Son Province, while a 34km expressway stretch is being built in Hoa Binh Province, both of which are in North Western Vietnam.

The $979 million expressway running 121km from Cao Bang Province to Lang Son Province will traverse complex terrain and will feature four tunnel sections as well as a number of bridges. Building the first 93.5km section of the route is expected to take three years and will cost $609 million, connecting the Tan Thanh border gate intersection in Lang Son Province with the National Highway 3 intersection in Chi Thao Commune in Cao Bang Province.

A similarly complex terrain will be traversed by the 34km expressway stretch in Hoa Binh Province, requiring 30 bridges along this section of the route. The section will run from Da Bac township to Chieng Yen commune.

The two expressway projects form part of a wider programme of road development for the country. The Vietnamese Government intends to have a 5,000km network of expressways by 2030. The North-South Expressway is the largest of these projects, improving transport across the country and helping boost the economy.
