Construction workers have made the breakthrough for Trebisacce Tunnel stretch for the new SS106 route in South Italy. The work forms part of the Third Mega Lot of the Ionica State Road (SS106) in Calabria.
Overall progress on the project has reached about 80%. The SS106 will improve connectivity along the Ionian coasts of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia, improving access to numerous coastal municipalities and linking the A14 and A2 highways.
Among the most complex and significant structures of the mega lot, the dual tube Trebisacce tunnel is being excavated using traditional methods By spring, the final two of the tunnel’s four breakthroughs will be completed, marking the end of the excavation phase.
The Avena viaduct is the most architecturally significant overpass of the entire project, featuring distinctive V-shaped steel piers. Another of the key structures is the Annunziata viaduct, which spans over 900m with a single carriageway and features a distinctive two-level steel-concrete composite deck, one for each direction. The Ferro viaduct meanwhile stands 20m tall and stretching over 500m, it features a mixed steel-concrete structure with 11 spans. Its construction required 2,800tonnes of steel and more than 23,000m3 of concrete.
When work commenced, the total project value for ANAS was some €1.33 billion, although this figure included additional costs. The Third Megalotto is the main project along the Calabrian section of the Jonica State Road 106. The project includes a 38km dual-carriageway route featuring 14 tunnels for a total of 10km, and 15 viaducts spanning 7km. The route runs through the provinces of Cosenza, Sibari and Roseto Capo Spulico, crossing the Alto Jonio Cosentino municipalities of Cassano all’Ionio, Francavilla Marittima, Cerchiara di Calabria, Villapiana, Trebisacce, Albidona, Amendolara and Roseto Capo Spulico. It includes four interchanges (Sibari, Cerchiara-Francavilla, Trebisacce and Roseto), ensuring connections with the existing road network, coastal towns and inland areas.
