The Tanzanian Government is setting out plans to invest nearly $965 million in infrastructure during the 2026-2027 financial year. Improving transport infrastructure will be a priority for the programme of works.
Highways, bridges and trunk roads will be constructed and improved under the plans. The aim of the work is to boost transport capacity and safety, reducing congestion and journey times. This is expected to improve the transport of goods and provide an economic boost to the country.
Tanzania has been carrying out a major upgrade of its road network, of which this programme forms part. Over $2.3 billion is being spent on 80 separate contracts underway at present. These works are aimed at improving the network, with surfacing work carried out to 14,000km of roads and new bridges being constructed.
The new bridge projects include a new structure for the country’s largest city Dar es Salaam. The 390m bridge is being built by the Chinese firm, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and is costing $35 million. The contract was awarded to the firm by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) and the work is expected to take 24 months to complete. Construction of the bridge, with two lanes in either direction, will make a major improvement in traffic flow for Dar es Salaam.
