The £1.3 billion project to improve a 29km stretch of the A66 in the UK will see the stretch widened so that it is a dual carriageway. Junctions linking the A66 with the A1 and M6 will also be improved.
Atkins,Balfour Beatty, Costain, Keltbray and Kier are all working on the project and Balfour Beatty is looking for subcontractors to assist with its portions of the work. Amey and Arup meanwhile have carried out the design portion of the project. The project was awarded by National Highways. This forms part of the National Highways’ Delivery Integration Partnership Framework.
Construction work is expected to commence at the end of January 2024 if the current schedule is maintained. When the project is complete, the improved A66 Northern Trans-Pennine route will reduce congestion and speed traffic flow through the key junctions at the A66/A6 and the M6 Junction 40.
