Switzerland saw its road deaths for 2019 drop significantly to the lowest level for many decades. In 2019 there were 187 road deaths in the country, compared with 233 in 2018 and 230 in 2017. Meanwhile, there were 3,639 serious injuries caused by road crashes in Switzerland in 2019, compared with 3,873 in 2018.
The country’s Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) says that the data shows how road safety continues to improve in Switzerland. Compared with five years earlier, the figure of 187 road deaths for 2019 is a drop of 16%. Meanwhile, the figure of 3,639 serious injuries represents a drop of 3% over the five year period.
A number of measures have been used to help lower the country’s crash rate and improve safety for road users. However, more work still needs to be done.
Speeding, driving under the influence (DUI) and distraction are the three significant factors with regard to fatal crashes, in descending level of importance. However, in the case of crashes involving serious injuries, distraction is the key factor, followed by speeding and then DUI.
