Russia is planning to build 12 bypasses around key cities. The bypasses are intended to become part of the Federal Highway network, with completion intended before 2024. The programme forms part of Russia’s Comprehensive Plan for Modernisation and Expansion of Trunk Transport Infrastructure.

One bypass is being built around Usolye-Sibirskoye in Irkutsk Region, Siberia. This new section of road will form part of the R-255 highway. Also in Siberia will be a bypass around Mariinsk in the Kemerovo Region and around Kansk in the Krasnoyarsk Region.

A bypass will be constructed around Anapa, forming part of the high-speed corridor connecting Sochi with Sevastopol. A bypass will run round Volgograd, with another around Gudermes forming part of the R-217 Kavkaz highway.

Design work is being carried out for bypasses around Ryazan, Medyn and Ivanovo in the Central Federal District. Design is also underway for bypasses for Naberezhnye Chelny in the Volga Federal District, as well as for Khasavyurt and Vladikavkaz in the North Caucasus.

Meanwhile, a new bridge spanning the Chusovaya River in the Perm Region is now expected to cost US$280.7 million. This represents a substantial increase over the original expected pricetag of $228.2 million for the project.
