Construction of the final 16km segment of the Bacău’s 30km orbital highway is finished, according to Catalin Drula,Romania’s transport minister.
The first 16km was opened last December.
The almost €136 million (US$161.3 million) orbital, of which around half is motorway grade, includes seven bridges, a junction and nine passages.
Bacău, with a population of around 200,000, is 300km north of Romania’s capital city Bucharest. It lies in the region of Moldavia, at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains and on the Bistrița River.
According to Romanian media, work on Bacău’s orbital was started in 2015 but quickly halted after disagreements with the Turkish contractor that had won the tender for the project. The project was later re-tendered. Romania’s transport network is being upgraded at present and this project forms part of the programme.
