Improvements are now underway for the US-Mexico border crossing that links the city of San Diego in California with the city of Tijuana in Mexico. The upgrade work for the Otay Mesa East border crossing is expected to cost US$1.1 billion.
This will reduce the time required at the border between the two nations and will boost capacity, helping trade between the US and Mexico. The crossing will be tolled. According to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the State Route 11 (SR 11)/Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Project (OME POE) is being carried out as a joint venture. The partnership is between the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and Caltrans, in collaboration with state and federal partners in the US and Mexico.
