The UK Government is providing £110 million of the required funding for the bypass around the southern side of Lincoln. The project is costing £218 million in total, with the work being carried out by Balfour Beatty.
Included in the project will be new roundabouts at South Hykeham Road, Brant Road and Grantham Road as well as two new bridges, with one spanning the Witham River and the other at Station Road. The area to the south of Lincoln is also known for flooding, which will place extra demands on the builders of the new road. The alignment also passes close to the historic RAF base at Waddington, which first opened as an aerodrome in 1916 and this is likely to place some restrictions on the construction activity.
According to the UK’s Department for Transport, the project will also give people more options to travel with safe cycling and walking provisions built into the scheme. Roads and Buses Minister, Simon Lightwood, said: “Roads are a key link for communities, boosting access to opportunities and jobs, which is why I am delighted to confirm funding for this project. We’re putting our money where our mouth is, with a £110 million investment that will mean faster journeys and less congestion. I look forward to seeing how it will transform Lincolnshire moving forward.”
The project is being managed by Lincolnshire County Council. The bypass was first proposed around 20 years ago and work is finally getting underway.
