Sund & Bælt, along with construction contractor Munck Havne & Anlæg, will begin the first stage to expand the Øresund Motorway in Copenhagen/København in April.
Extra lanes will be added between exit 20, København C, and exit 17, Lufthavn V. A parallel ramp will also be established between exit 19, Ørestad, and exit 20, København S.
The Øresund Motorway forms part of the Øresund Link (bridge) between Copenhagen and Malmö in Sweden, connecting the Scandinavian peninsula with the European mainland. Locally, the Øresund Motorway serves as a vital traffic artery for central traffic connection to and from Copenhagen Airport in Kastrup.
The most congested section of the Øresund Motorway is the westernmost part with the branches towards the Amager Motorway and Copenhagen C, where almost 100,000 drivers use the motorway daily.
Initial feasibility and design work was completed in 2023 by consulting engineers Systra, with Sweco as a sub-consultant. The Øresund motorway stretches almost 10km from the Amager motorway under the Centrumforbindelsen, past Ørestad, Tårnby and the airport to the Øresund Bridge.
Sund & Bælt was established as a 100 per cent state-owned company for construction of the fixed link across Øresund in December 1991.
Sund & Bælt Holding, as the parent company, has overall management of the activities in its 100 per cent owned subsidiaries. The subsidiaries are Storebælt, Øresund, Femern Landanlæg, Sund & Bælt Partner and Brobizz.
Sund & Bælt also, through its Øresund subsidiary, owns 50 per cent of Øresundsbro Konsortiet, which in turn owns and operates the Øresund Bridge. The state-owned Swedish company, SVEDAB AB, owns the other 50 per cent.
Sund & Bælt is also the operating company with overall responsibility for Storebælt and Øresund.
