Road crashes caused by driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol are a serious problem in New Zealand according to official data. A report compiled by New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) shows that road crashes caused by DUI have cost an average of US$445,203/day (NZ$636,000/day) over the past five years.
The data shows that the problem is particularly acute in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland. Over the past five years, DUI has cost the city around US$154.7 million (NZ$221 million).
Driving under the influence of drugs is also a major issue in New Zealand. Overall, New Zealand’s record on road safety is comparatively poor for a developed nation.
