New Zealand’s massive Warkworth-Puhoi highway project is set to see traffic beginning using the link in May 2022. The project has cost over US$626 million (NZ$880 million) to build.
The project has been overseen by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and its PPP partner, Northern Express Group, while the construction work has been carried out by a joint venture comprising Fletcher and ACCIONA.
The Pu¯hoi-to-Warkworth motorway extends the Northern Motorway (SH1) by 18.5km to the north of Auckland. The alignment runs from the Johnstone’s Hill tunnels, south of Pu¯hoi, to a major roundabout past the town of Warkworth, where the highway also branches off to Wellsford further north.
The new highway will help boost capacity to meet growing traffic volumes, while cutting journey times and boosting safety for drivers in and around Auckland,New Zealand’s largest city.
