Rebuild work will be carried out on the Raritan River bridge, which forms part of the New JerseyTurnpike in the US. The work is expected to cost US$172.5 million and includes the installation of a new deck. Other work will include repairs to the structural steel, strengthening of the superstructure, and improvements to the median barrier and guard rails. The lighting for the bridge was replaced just a few years ago and protection was also added recently to prevent scour.
The contract will be handled by D’Annunzio & Sons of South Plainfield and the work is due for completion in 2025. The contractor was one of seven firms to tender for the work and won with the lowest cost bid.
The rebuilding work on the Raritan River bridge forms part of the wider bridge rehabilitation and replacement programme planned by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.
Measuring just over 245m, the Raritan River bridge is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey and is one of the longest bridges along the southern end of the New Jersey Turnpike. The bridge dates back to the early 1950s and was one of the first sections of the New Jersey Turnpike to be completed.
The Raritan River Turnpike Bridge is not to be confused with the similarly named Raritan River Bridge. The latter is a rail bridge spanning the Raritan River, connecting New Brunswick and Highland Park in Middlesex County, New Jersey. This rail bridge is also being replaced as it was damaged by Storm Sandy.
