More progress is being seen for the $6.7 billion Newark Bay Bridge replacement project. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority will commence the pre-qualification process for contractors in mid-2026. The bidding process will then open later in 2026, followed by the awarding of the work. A construction management package has been awarded for the project so far.

The existing bridge measures 2.9km in length, was constructed in 1956 and has a 390m central span with 41m clearance. It is ageing however and requires replacement to ensure a reliable traffic link.

The work is being overseen by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) and forms part of the wider $10.7 billion Turnpike Extension Improvements Program. This will see improvements to a 13km stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike between Newark and Jersey City.
