Zagreb in Croatia is planning a new bridge spanning the Sava River. A design competition is being held for the structure, which is expected to be 625m in length by 38m-wide.
The new bridge is expected to carry two lanes in either direction for vehicle traffic as well as a tram line and provision for cyclists and pedestrians. This will be the first bridge to be constructed in West Zagreb for 45 years and the third in the city with a tram connection. Once the bridge is complete, it is expected to help reduce traffic congestion in the city.
A stipulation of the competition is that the design of the bridge will ensure the structure costs €140 million, or less, to build (excluding VAT). The competition is ensuring that the bridge features a novel design that will be a landmark structure for the nation. Construction is expected to commence in 2028. The new bridge will link Trešnjevka – south and Novi Zagreb – west.
