Discussions are still being held in India for a new road tunnel link for India’s capital, New Delhi. The proposal centres on the construction of $740 million new tunnel link featuring three lanes in either direction. The tunnel alignment would connect Nelson Mandela Road in South Delhi with the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
The new tunnel would help reduce the city’s severe traffic congestion problems and cut journey times for drivers. Construction of the new tunnel would improve transport for the Mahipalpur corridor, which links Delhi with its international airport as well as Gurugram.
Should the project be finalised, it would take around five years to construct. A TBM has been considered suitable to drive the tunnel and would feature a cutterhead of 13m diameter.
The project is part of a wider plan to reduce traffic delays in and around India’s capital. Projects already carried out include the Dwarka Expressway and Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Another project is for the 32km expressway with four lanes in either direction between Indira Gandhi International Airport and the Noida International Airport at Jewar.
