Construction is planned for a new tunnel linking Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel in Mumbai, India. There will also be a 10km elevated stretch of road linking Fountain Hotel and Bhayandar. The 5.5km tunnel will be driven using a TBM with a 14m diameter cutting head, with the work taking around five years to complete.
Both the tunnel and the elevated highway stretch will feature three lanes for traffic in either direction and the 15.5km link is expected to cost around $1.8 billion to build. The new traffic connection will help to reduce traffic congestion and delays for drivers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The project is one of several infrastructure works approved by the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee of the state government of Maharashtra worth nearly $2.4 billion aimed at reducing journey times for commuters in the MMR.
Meanwhile in the North of India, a new two lane tunnel is being proposed to link Udhampur and Ramban. This will run alongside the existing Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel on the Chenani-Nashri section of NH-44. The new tunnel will provide a capacity boost for the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, reducing traffic delays on India’s important NH-44 route.
