Mongolia is setting out plans for a five-year project to deliver sustainable roads and transport for the capital Ulaanbaatar. The project is of high importance as the city is notorious for its high levels of airborne pollution, much of which comes from transport emissions.
Much of the funding for the project will be provided through a loan of around US$100 million. The work is expected to have a total cost of $115 million. This forms one of many road projects for Mongolia at present.
Reducing congestion and improving traffic flow will be amongst the targets of the project. Widening work for the roads at Bayankhoshuu and Unur Khoroolol will be carried out, expanding them to two lanes in either direction. Parts of the Narny Zam Road will feature up to three lanes in either direction.
Meanwhile,improved facilities are also planned for pedestrians and cyclists in a bid to boost active travel in the city.
