Improvement works to the Pátzcuaro-Uruapan highway in Mexico are close to completion. The 47km route 14D is being widened and upgraded, while the work is costing $105 million.
Once the work is finished, the road will feature two lanes in either direction and this is expected to cut journey times substantially on the route. The new road features a viaduct, two bridges, three underpasses and eight junctions.
The work will help the agricultural industry in the area, as well as helping to boost tourism. The project forms part of the Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice and has been managed by Mexico’s Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT).
The $3 billion Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice aims to improve 411km of highways and 2,235km of roads by the time the programme of works is complete in 2029. Other highways being upgraded under the programme are the routes from Zitácuaro-Maravatío, Uruapan-Nueva Italia and Nueva Italia-Lázaro Cárdenas.
