Malaysia’s Federal Government is working on improvements for the Pasir Gudang Highway. The route has been plagued by crashes and has also suffered flood damage, with US$18 million having budgeted for the initial works. Improvement work is intended to boost road safety on the route and also its resilience to climate change. The road features two lanes in either direction at present but will be widened so that it features three lanes in either direction. The upgrade works commenced in the third quarter of 2022 and should take two and a half years to complete.
Meanwhile, resurfacing works will start in Selangor State in March 2023. The road maintenance and upgrade work will help improve road links and has a budget of $11.4 million. A total of $33 million is being budgeted for road improvements by the Selangor State Government.
In addition the Malaysian Government is budgeting $47.5 million for improvement work to the bridge spanning Sungai Kerian. A portion of the funding will also be used for a new flyover for the junction of Jalan Persekutuan and Jalan Transkrian. Road works for the FT001 route between Penang and Petak should help reduce congestion and also minimise flooding after heavy rains. The work should be complete in early 2025.
