French city Lyon could benefit from a new road tunnel, intended to cut traffic congestion. The proposed tunnel would run 8km underneath the city, with an estimated construction cost of around €2 billion.
Building the new tunnel project is intended to help alleviate congestion on the existing Fourvière tunnel in the city. The route of the new road tunnel would provide a link from the A6 at Pont d’Écully/Valvert to the A7 at Saint-Fons/Boulevard périphérique Laurent Bonnevay. The alignment would carry the tunnel underneath the River Saône and the River Rhône, as well as the Presqu’île area in between.
The project would be due for completion in 2037.
