The plans have been approved for the proposed Lincoln Bypass project in the UK. The plans were given the all-clear by Lincolnshire County Council’s executive committee.
The project is expected to cost from £179-212 million and is for the construction of a new dual carriageway to link the A46 Pennells Roundabout to the Lincoln Eastern Bypass. Of the funding required, £110 million is to be provided by the Department for Transport(DfT) and £38 million will come from the local council. Another £10 million will from the developer. However, there are concerns over a shortfall for the project and it is not clear as yet where the remaining sum required will come from.
The last stretch of the bypass to be built, the Lincoln Eastern Bypass, opened in 2020 and measures 7.5km in length. The funding for this was provided jointly, with £50 million from the UK Government, £37 million from the county council and £34 million from third party developers.
More detailed plans will have to be drawn up and there are several hurdles to pass yet. However, the construction work could start in late 2025 if all goes to schedule. Building the new link is expected to take 36 months to complete.
