The final section of a €20.7 million (£17.5milllion) southern bypass around the English city of Lichfield has opened.
It connects the A5127 Birmingham Road with the A5206 London Road and has included building an underpass beneath the Cross City railway line.
The scheme is being funded by housing developer Persimmon Homes. The new road will link with a new housing development and primary school in addition to easing congestion in Lichfield city centre, particularly around the railway station.
The route also enables the future restoration and construction of the Lichfield & Hatherton Canal. The city, round 26km north of Birmingham, is noted for its three-spired medieval cathedral and being the birthplace of Samuel Johnson who wrote first authoritative dictionary of the English Language.
