Germany is facing a massive €15 billion shortfall for its highway budget in the 2026 to 2029 period. This has serious implications, with numerous major highway projects likely to face extensive delays as a result.
Although many projects are planned and have the necessary approvals, they will now be delayed unless additional funding is sourced. New construction as well as maintenance and repair works for key federal routes and Autobahn projects will be impacted by the shortfall.
There are 74 major highway projects across Germany that will be affected by the funding issues. One of the key routes requiring upgrade is for the A8 that connects Stuttgart with Munich in South Germany. The stretch between Mühlhausen and Hohenstadt is no longer fit for purpose and needs to be widened and improved but may now have to wait for additional funding to be secured.
