Funding is being made available to address defective bridges in the US. The Bridge Investment Programme will provide a total of US$10 billion in funding for bridge repairs, upgrades and replacement projects.
This is being managed by the US Department of Transportation’s (USDOT), which is handling the applications. Projects costing more than $100 million will be eligible to apply for funding.
During 2022 $2.4 billion was directed towards bridge works in the US via the Bridge Investment Programme. This resulted in work being carried out to 37 bridges in 29 states. The largest project to benefit was the $1.38 billion work for the Brent Spence Bridge. Opened to traffic in 1963, the bridge was designed to carry 85,000 vehicles/day but reached a peak traffic volume of 150,000 vehicles/day. The project is seeing the Brent Spence Bridge reconfigured so that it carries local traffic, with a new structure being built to connect I-75 between Kentucky and Ohio.
