Finland’s transport infrastructure networks are in need of extensive repair and maintenance works. The necessary repairs and upgrades to the road, rail and waterway networks will cost an estimated €4.2 billion.
Each year a shortfall of spending on repair maintenance works means that the problem is growing. In Finland’s South Ostrobothnia area alone the extent of roads requiring work increases by around 400-450km of roads/year.
Although many of the roads requiring maintenance are low traffic routes in rural areas they still provide essential transport connections to remote parts of the country that would otherwise be extremely difficult to access. Extreme winter weather in Finland also results in heavy wear and tear on asphalt road surfaces.
