Egypt is planning a major programme of transport infrastructure development works. This national programme will see a total of 7,000km of roads being constructed at an estimated cost of close to US$9.8 billion.
The programme will expand the network from 23,500km to around 30,500km. Meanwhile, the country’s rail network will also be extended to some 10,200km by 2024 and 11,530km by 2030. This major programme of transport development is being planned by the Transport Ministry.
Egypt has done much in recent years to improve its transport infrastructure. Major projects carried out include the massive upgrade of the busy highway connecting its capital,Cairo, with the major port of Alexandria and construction of anew tunnel link under the Suez Canal, close to Ismailia. They also include improvements to the highway connection linking Egypt with its North African neighbours, as well as to the highway running north-south via Asyut, Sohag, Luxor and Aswan to the border with Sudan.
These latest projects will help reduce chronic congestion on existing routes given Egypt’s fast growing population and increasing vehicle numbers.
