A new legal challenge has been lodged against the Stonehenge Bypass project in the UK. The challenge has been brought by the Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site (SSWHS).

The UK’s transport secretary recently gave approval for the construction of the £1.7 billion (€1.91 billion) project to build a 3.2km dual tube tunnel and connecting roads near the site of the historic monument.

That the legal challenge has been launched against the project should surprise absolutely nobody who has been following developments. Environmental and archaeological groups have long been against the project to build the new tunnel.

Improving the A303 at this stretch will cut congestion and prevent the traffic delays that occur frequently on the route at this point, while also improving safety for drivers and local residents alike.

The Stonehenge Alliance is firmly against the project on both environmental and historical grounds.
