Construction work continues for the upgrading of the A6 Autobahn in Bavaria, Germany with the project due for completion in 2026. The Unterrieden valley bridge located to the east of Nuremburg has been completed. The bridge spans the Raschbach valley and a local road.
In early 2022 the deck for the first part of the crossing was pushed into place and this was completed later in the year, with traffic then using the structure and the original part of the crossing being demolished. The parallel crossing was pushed into place in late 2024 and traffic is now using the new bridge. Improvement work was completed for the junction of the A6 and A9 to the south of Nuremburg in mid-2024, boosting capacity and safety.
Handling up to 66,000 vehicles/day of which 18,000 vehicles/day are heavy trucks, the A6 between Nuremburg and Heilbronn provides a key transportation route across Germany for Central Europe for international transport.
The A6 is the German stretch of the European Road E50, linking the Caspian Sea in the east with the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It connects Nuremberg and Stuttgart and (along with the A8 to the south) is the most important east-west link in southern Germany.
Widening work and improvements have been carried out previously between the state border of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria as well as the junction with the A7. Repaving work for an 11km stretch of the A6 was completed in the third quarter of 2025, having commenced in mid-2025. The traffic diversions during this period also allowed for work to three overpasses. Noise barriers ranging from 4-9m-high have been installed close to Schnelldorf along a 4km stretch to reduce disturbance to the surrounding area.
