Balfour Beatty has won a €1.37 billion by National Highways to deliver the “Roads North of the Thames” package for the Lower Thames Crossing.

The Lower Thames Crossing will create anew connection under the River Thames, down river from London in the south-east of England.

Balfour will design and delivery of over 16km of highways, connecting the M25 motorway at Junction 29 and the A13 trunk road with the planned Lower Thames Crossing tunnel at Tilbury in the county of Essex. In addition, the company will deliver 49 structures including bridges and major viaducts.

Balfour Beatty said it will use modular construction to build the structures offsite in a controlled factory environment that will significantly reducing carbon emissions by minimising the number of lorry movements and material deliveries to and from site. This approach will support Balfour Beatty’s commitment to going Beyond Net Zero Carbon by 2040, as well as National Highways’ low-carbon targets for the project.

Following an 18-month period of detailed design and pre-construction planning, a Notice to Proceed from the Department for Transport is expected in 2024. Completion is expected between 2029 and 2030.

Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering won the work over the Kier Eiffage JV.

Meanwhile, bidders for the road works in the county of Kent – south of the tunnel– include BFV JV, Costain, Kier Eiffage JV and Skanska Construction UK.
