Funding worth is being provided for a key road project worth $370 million in El Salvador. The funding package is being supplied jointly by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the South Korean Government.
The project is for the 15km Los Chorros highway extension, with the work being split into three stretches. Two sections of the route will benefit from maintenance and will be widened and upgraded, while the third portion of the project is for the construction of a new viaduct.
The viaduct is being built to bypass a section of the existing road that is at risk of landslides and rockfalls that cause blockages, particularly during the rainy season. New interchanges are also being built while rest areas and facilities for cyclists and pedestrians will be added also.
The project will improve stretches of the Pan American Highway, boosting capacity and safety for drivers. The new viaduct will be the largest every built in El Salvador. Improvements will be carried out to the section of road connecting with the interchange for Colón.
