Construction work is underway for the new $365 million bridge linking Samal Island with Davao City in the Philippines. The project is being managed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Several major highway projects are underway in the Philippines at present, work that will improve transport for the nation. This particular project will deliver an economic boost to the island of Mindanao.
Work for the Samal Island-Davao City Connector (SIDC) Bridge project is due for completion in 2028. The columns that will support the viaducts at either end of the bridge have been completed, while foundation work for the centre section is underway. Once the new bridge is open, it will replace the existing ferry service and cut the journey times from around 55 minutes to just 4.5 minutes.
The new bridge will span the Pakiputan Strait, linking the R Castillo-Daang Maharlika Junction in Davao City and the Circumferential Road in Samal Island. Measuring 4.75km in length, the bridge will carry two lanes of traffic in either direction, with construction having commenced in 2022.
Also known as the Island Garden City of Samal, this is a centre for tourism and the largest resort area in the Philippines. The completion of the new bridge will help the tourism trade, a key economic driver for the region.
