Construction work is nearing completion for the $346 million express lanes project for I-485 in North Carolina. The I-485 route runs around the city of Charlotte but has become heavily congested at peak periods.

The project has been carried out for client, North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Growth in vehicle numbers for the city has followed an increase in population in the area.

The work to add 29km of express lanes to I-485 has taken seven years. The project has also added a general-purpose lane in each direction along I-485 between Rea Road and Providence Road.  The work is expected to cut congestion and journey times between I-77 and Highway 74.

According to NCDOT, this project will serve as part of a larger network of express lanes intended to reduce journey times. The work has been carried out in coordination with other projects in southern Mecklenburg County.
