Discussions are being held in Australia for the $2.1 billion (A$3.2 billion) M6 motorway project in New South Wales. Work had to be halted on a 244m section of twin tube tunnels when a sinkhole measuring 10m in diameter appeared on the surface in Sydney’s Rockdale area in March 2025. The project is one of several being carried out to improve road links in Sydney.
Officials from the New South Wales State Government are discussing the problems with contractors involved in the project, in an attempt to secure a technical resolution. Completion of the project will now be 36 months later than first planned.
The M6 project is intended to help reduce traffic congestion in Sydney. A growing population and an increase in vehicle traffic has resulted in the city suffering major delays for drivers on existing routes.
