Cameroon is looking to upgrade its portion of the road route linking Douala with the city Bangui in the neighbouring Central Africa Republic (CAR). The cost of the work to improve the 800km route between Douala and Garoua Mboulaï, on the border with the CAR, has been estimated at $1.6 billion.
The first stage of the project will be the work to improve the transport link between Douala and Yaoundé, Cameroon’s two largest cities, which is expected to cost around $763.4 million. This stage of the project is due to commence in 2027. Work will also be carried out on the road linking Yaoundé with Ayos, Bonis, Bertoua and Garoua Mboulaï, while a new bridge will be built at Dibamba and weigh stations will be built at Mbankomo and Edéa.
The Cameroon Government has been carrying out discussions over financing and planning with institutions including the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank, the French Development Agency, European Union and European Investment Bank. The project will boost transport efficiency along the corridor. Cameroon’s Ministry of Public Works is overseeing the country’s portion of the project.
