The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has awarded a $146 million package of works to local firm Jordan Foster Construction. This will be the first phase of a wider project to upgrade US 90 on the West side of San Antonio between SH 211 and I-410, which runs around the city.
Jordan Foster will carry out upgrade work to a 5.5km stretch of US 90 between I-410 and Loop 1604. This work is due for completion in 2030.
Work is anticipated to commence on the 7km stretch of US 90 between Loop 1604 and SH 211 in 2028 and should take around 36 months to complete. The funding for this stretch has yet to be finalised, with the tendering process to select a contractor for the work expected in due course.
The entire project is expected to cost around $473 million, with the work providing three lanes in either direction as well as revamped interchange connections once complete. Auxiliary lanes, a roundabout and facilities for vulnerable road users will also be included in the package. The project will boost capacity significantly as the existing road features only two lanes in either direction. This will help meet anticipated demand, with traffic volumes on the route expected to double by 2045.
