A grant of US$127 million will help pay for key road works in the US state of Indiana. The funding package is being provided by the National Infrastructure Project Assistance (MEGA) programme.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will use the grant for work to the I-80/I-94 FlexRoad project in Northwest Indiana. This project is costing $212.5 million in all and involves utilising Traffic System Management and Operations (TSMO) strategies along a 19km stretch of the route.
Design work is underway at present and the tender process is expected to open in 2025, with construction due in 2026. The work is one of several road projects due for Indiana, which is notorious for having some of the worst road conditions in the US. Severe winters and a lack of routine maintenance in recent have resulted in severe deterioration of road links, a situation INDOT is striving to address.
