Construction work for the Bioceanic Route bridge connecting Brazil and Paraguay is nearing completion. The project is costing around $100 million, with financing being provided by Itaipu Binacional. The bridge is one of several being built to improve landlocked Paraguay’s international connections with its larger neighbours.
The bridge spans the Paraguay River and links Porto Murtinho in Brazil with Carmelo Peralta and the new PY15 route in Paraguay. The new bridge provides an important connection in the 2,400km route that will link the Pacific Coast and Atlantic Coast through Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile, across the South American Continent.
The bridge will measure nearly 1.3km in length when complete, with the construction due to be finished in mid-2026. Completion of the connecting roads on the Brazilian and Paraguyan sides will take until 2028 to be fully ready for use. Around 250 trucks/day are expected to use the bridge when it open initially, with transport traffic anticipated to rise considerably as the new route becomes established.
